Modesty Tznius
We
learn in our western culture that it is good to show off. We live in
a materialistic world and "things'' are important. So women
dress less, because the fashion industry tells us so. And what can a
woman best show off? Indeed. But... The female body is not a thing.
The human body is precious. So the western world can't be farther
from the truth.
In Judaism we learn that the body, female but also male, is like a diamond. With the greatest respect we wrap it in. We take care of it and cherish it. We don't show it to the world. It is important to respect your body. Don't be attractive to all men, but only to the one you really love. Modesty is beautiful, and women can be really beautiful without showing off.
Judaism tells us that the body is the clothing of the soul. We are not our bodies. We are our souls, and that is what we must show to the world. It feels free to dress modest, being yourself.
In fact, modesty is more. It is also behaviour, knowing when to speak and what to say, it is about being humble and being kind.
Let
the world see who you are. Not what you are.
Here are some tips:
Cover the knees, wear your skirt long or 3/4 long
Cover the elbows, wear your shirts or blouses with long or 3/4 long sleeves
No decollete but high collar blouse, and a bit wide,
no prints on the front of your shirt which accent your front but all around is okay.
And something on the head is great.
Noahides don't have to wear scarves like Jewish women do, but wearing a cap outside, or hat, will do and looks very nice.
Read Deuteronomy 22:5. Male garb shall not be on a woman, and a man shall not wear a woman's garment, for anyone who does so, it is an abomination of G'd.
